Application

The VistaSort Optical Color Sorter removes foreign material (sticks, debris, stones), colour defects (caused by disease, immaturity, or moisture damage), splits, and undecorticated seeds in pulse crops such as lentils, beans, and peas. In recent testing and VistaSort installations, we’ve achieved excellent results in grass and forage seeds, where small, lightweight seeds benefit greatly from optical color sorting based on colour, shape, and size.

In cereal grains, our optical color sorter removes a full range of contaminants — including sticks, hulls, stones, ergot, foreign material (such as wild oats), discoloured seeds, and immature or diseased kernels.

Even when the visual difference between acceptable and unacceptable product is extremely subtle, VistaSort’s advanced optical color sorting technology delivers the highest standards of precision in the industry.

Why Choose VistaSort Color Sorters?

1.

Precision Imaging Technology

VistaSort optical colour sorters combine high-resolution RGB cameras with optional infrared vision to detect even the most subtle differences in colour, disease, damage, or contamination. This advanced optical colour sorting technology identifies defects that traditional systems miss, ensuring maximum purity and consistency.

Whether you’re removing ergot, wild oats, immature kernels, or foreign material, VistaSort’s optical colour sorter delivers industry-leading accuracy for seed and grain cleaning across pulses, cereals, oilseeds, and specialty crops.

2.

Flexible Options

With single to ten-chute models available, VistaSort optical colour sorting systems are custom-fit for your crop type and processing volume. From small-scale test labs to full commercial seed and grain facilities, our optical colour sorters provide scalable performance that grows with your operation.

3.

Shape & Size Recognition

Advanced software in VistaSort’s optical color sorting systems allows separation not only by color, but also by product geometry and size. This enables precise removal of splits, cracks, and non-conforming seeds with the accuracy today’s seed and grain processors rely on.

4.

Designed for Canadian Standards

VistaSort has developed a highly sophisticated image-processing algorithm designed to detect even the smallest impurities. Using high-resolution RGB cameras, optional infrared vision, and pixel-level analysis down to 0.04 mm, the system evaluates each seed or grain particle in real time.

The algorithm compares colour, shape, texture, and size against predefined profiles, allowing it to identify subtle defects such as early disease indicators, mild discolouration, micro-cracks, or foreign material that would be invisible to the human eye.

This advanced processing logic ensures consistent, high-accuracy optical colour sorting across a wide range of crop types — resulting in cleaner product, improved purity, and reduced good-product loss.

Components

1.

EJECTORS

Imported from Italy. The ejectors contain a high-frequency electromagnetic solenoid valve with a 10 billion millisecond precision and a consistency of near-zero error to ensure high accuracy.

2.

DSP + FPGA

Our control chip is made in the USA. The combination of DSP and FPGA produces powerful computing capabilities. It has extremely fast data collection, can process large amounts of information, and perform various operations simultaneously.

3.

CCD CAMERAS

A Japanese high-end 2048-pixel CCD chip camera can identify spots as small as 0.04mm. The optical design provides a more accurate color selection when coupled with intelligent algorithms.

4.

INTELLIGENT IMAGE PROCESSING ALGORITHM

We have developed a complex algorithm so that even the smallest of impurities can be detected.

5.

OPTICAL SYSTEM

Compact system design, a precise calibration system, and an intuitive machine interface make our machine operator friendly.

6.

300MM WIDE CHUTE

Our 300mm wide chute is built with a special anodizing process and was designed to meet the specifications required for many applications around the world.

How VistaSort Optical Color Sorting Systems Work

VistaSort optical color sorting systems are built around multiple precision-engineered subsystems that work together to deliver consistent, high-accuracy separation for seed and grain processors.

Every VistaSort optical color sorter begins with a precision-controlled vibratory feed system designed to deliver uniform product distribution across each chute.

Polished, low-friction surfaces guide seeds and grains smoothly into the optical inspection zone, while consistent feed flow ensures accurate and repeatable optical color sorting performance across a wide range of crops.

VistaSort optical color sorters use full-color Japanese CCD cameras engineered for high-resolution inspection, delivering optical precision down to 0.04 mm.

Advanced image-processing software evaluates each seed or grain against predefined accept and reject profiles in real time. Optional Infrared and multispectral imaging add another layer of detection for moisture-related, disease-based, or internal defects that traditional systems cannot see.

VistaSort ejector systems are powered by rapid-fire electromagnetic solenoid ejectors imported from Italy.

These ultra-responsive valves remove off-spec material with pinpoint precision while minimizing good product loss. The result is higher purity, improved yield, and consistent performance even at high throughput rates.

VistaSort optical color sorters are powered by advanced DSP and FPGA control chips manufactured in the USA.

The intuitive touchscreen interface supports self-diagnostics, auto-calibration, and multiple saved sorting recipes for different crops and defect profiles. Multilingual support and training-friendly design make operation simple for any skill level.

VistaSort optical color sorter systems are housed in airtight, pressurized optical chambers to prevent dust and debris from entering the vision system.

This sealed design protects optical components, extends system lifespan, and ensures consistent sorting accuracy. Food-safe contact surfaces and optional stainless steel finishes support demanding seed and grain processing environments.

Built-in sampling trays allow operators to monitor accept and reject streams during optical color sorting.

Side-by-side samples make it easy to verify calibration accuracy and fine-tune machine settings in real time, helping processors maintain maximum precision and confidence during operation.

Optical Color Sorting FAQs

Optical color sorting is a process that uses high resolution cameras and precision air ejectors to remove unwanted material from seed and grain based on color, shape, and size. It improves purity, consistency, and overall product value.

VistaSort optical color sorters inspect each individual kernel as it passes through the chute using advanced CCD and optional infrared cameras. When a defect is detected, rapid fire ejectors remove it instantly while good product continues through the accept stream.

VistaSort optical color sorters are used on cereals, pulses, edible beans, oilseeds, and specialty crops. Common applications include wheat, barley, lentils, peas, navy beans, canary seed, and many others.

Optical color sorting removes discolored seed, foreign material, disease damaged kernels, insect damage, broken seed, and off type product that traditional cleaning equipment cannot detect.

Gravity separators separate product by density, while optical color sorters separate by visual characteristics such as color, shape, and size. Many processing lines use both machines together for maximum purity and yield.

VistaSort optical color sorters are designed for real world seed and grain processing, offering high precision, durable construction, and long term reliability. Every system is supported by VistaSort’s experienced Canadian service and support team.
